TASTER GAP 'YEAR' TRIPS

“Taster” Gap 'years' can be as short as 2 or 4 weeks.

Following a demand for shorter career breaks Gap Year for Grown Ups (www.inspiredbreaks.co.uk) has announced “taster” trips of 2 or 4 weeks in several destinations around the world this year. Trips of this length can clearly be arranged without big upheaval, or having to make a life-changing decision.

Rachael Wood Manager of Gap Year for Grown Ups has noticed how popular these shorter gap breaks are becoming. “For those who are apprehensive about a big trip, the shorter durations are an ideal introduction. On the other hand,” she adds, “we have lots of enquiries from people who have limited time and really want to do something worthwhile with their holidays.”

Susan Felton (52), a nursery nurse from Essex, joined a volunteer programme in North India last summer and was so impressed she is going back this summer and taking a friend. “I felt brilliant on this trip and learnt so much about myself. I loved meeting people from different cultures and countries.”

Teaching children in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka is hugely rewarding, and even in a month a valuable contribution can be made. Prices from £499 for 4 weeks in Sri Lanka, £899 in Goa, and £1099 in Nepal.

One of the most popular volunteer programmes is in Zambia, where there are various community projects including medicine and teaching. Every little helps. 2 weeks costs £995 and 4 weeks £ 1295.

For those interested in wildlife, the Namibia Noah's Ark Project welcomes short-term volunteers. Based on a family run farm the project has established a secure home for neglected or orphaned animals. Volunteers can help for 2 or 4 weeks ((£799/£1299). Also in Namibia the Desert Elephant Project focuses on elephant conservation (2 weeks costs £849 and 4 weeks £1349).

For some more light-hearted fun, conservation volunteers are welcome all over Australia (2 weeks £299/4 weeks £549), and for somewhere really unusual Gap Year for Grown Ups even offers projects in Mongolia (4 weeks £749). Latin America too has several interesting short projects.

Gap Year for Grown Ups is based in Tunbridge Wells and is the only UK organisation specialising in time out for adults aged 30+. Sister company Real Gap Experience (www.realgap.co.uk) is one of the biggest gap year providers in the UK, and has more choice of programmes and destinations than any other operator.
