Namibia

Jim Tunnicliffe
Desert Elephant Conservation, Namibia

The organization run by Rachel and Johannes is a wonderful project looking after the need of both elephants and people. And I feel honoured to have met both persons and of course the elephants. To be involved in such a project was a real privilege. I am now a little more informed of the plight of these elephants and can understand why both Rachel and Johannes are so passionate about this project.

I have fallen in love with Africa; it was an awesome place, a fantastic experience and has had a significant impact on my life. Namibia blew me away, the endless savannah, the kopjes and the amazing African skies.

There were so many [highlights], but if I had to pinpoint a couple it would be spending a week trying to track cheetahs and leopards which had been released, and having to climb mountains in order to try to pick up a signal from their collars and also being able to go in the enclosures with the tame and semi-tame cheetahs.

Field Guide Training Course South Africa

Memorable moments: seeing a cheetah take down a springbok in the Kgaligadi Transfronteir park, passing all my exams, working on the Eco schools project at my placement. Raising an African Wildcat, the wildcat that Steph Taylor mentions, raising a bat eared fox, working with film crews filming Buster the Honey Badger and Caesar the Caracal.

Zambia Medical and Orphan Programme

I also went on a 5-day trip to Zimbabwe for some game viewing in Hwange and Matopos National Parks, and visited a lion-breeding project in Antelope Park. The highlight was walking with 6 month old lion cubs...amazing...they were so gorgeous!

Himachal Pradesh Teaching Programme, India

I found the experience to be extremely worthwhile and rewarding. In spite of my lack of teaching experience I felt that I had made good progress during my time and certainly provided a good grounding from which future volunteers can build on.

I have always had an empathy and passion for India. I love the food, clothes, music and the people and I had made up my mind to visit, I liked the idea of seeing a bit of the country before embarking on a volunteer project teaching English to children.

4 weeks Orangutan Experience, Malaysia

What was amazing was seeing them swing through the trees as God intended and I have to say it did make me a little wistful and wish that Wasabi could experience this freedom. They are the most amazing creatures to witness in their natural habitat and their high wire antics and their agility on the lianas is breathtaking.

Malaysia Orang-utan experience

When we moved to the jungle we stayed in a wooden lodge, which again was plenty big enough for the 14 of us and for the many visits we received from the tribe who lived up the river from us. The food that was produced was terrific. I will never forget our nights of sitting round the big table, doing whatever we wanted, and being totally entertained by our company.

Nepal

William Carter
Nepal English Teaching Assistant Project

I think this is a fantastic programme, the nepalese people are so warm and welcoming I never felt unsafe for one moment.

On reflection I think the project exceeded my expectations, I did not realize how close you can become to other people in such a short time.

Australia

Paul Barber
Australia Conservation Volunteers and Australia Tall Ship Sailing

Our work over the next 3 days was to remove the invasive weed Siratro and invasive shrub Lantana which were gaining a hold in parts of the island. This work was put into context by Joe and Jason and although the work could be hard and tiring it was more than compensated for by the fantastic scenery and wildlife. There were the miles of sandy beaches, the large sand dunes, the rock pools, the lakes and tropical forest.

Conservation Volunteers Australia

It was all very much not what I am used in my usual daily routine but I enjoyed it so much, and you looked after us all so well! I particularly loved meeting all the other volunteers - such lovely, lovely people, and I hope to stay in touch with some of them! I have some fantastic memories and wouldn't change a single minute of it (even the camping!!).

There are many memorable moments, the visit and the stay at the Summer Camps for orphans outside Chisinau and in Transnistria. The sightseeing at the monasteries. To meet and to get to know the other volunteers. I felt alive and very happy there.

Costa Rica

Jacky Davies
Costa Rica Sloth Rescue and Conservation

We finished feeding and looking after our sloths around 15.00, sometimes we caught the local bus to our nearest village Cahuita, where we could swim, snorkel, shop or have a beer; or we could take a canoe out on the river at the sanctuary, looking for the wild sloths, caymen and howler monkeys.

My knowledge of numbers and colours in Spanish came in very handy here. I made a game of Twister and they loved it. The children were a joy and they didn't want me to leave. The teacher said that she would never forget me and the work we had done together.

I then started work at the refuge, helping street kids with their homework, teaching basic English and playing games - rewarding, enjoyable and I really felt that I had made a difference.

I had a fantastic time! Ecuador has so many diverse regions, (climate, natural features, people and culture) within easy reach of Quito. The natural beauty is amazing, particularly the Galapagos which is worth every cent of the expensive trip.

Round the World

Francis Hughes
Tailor-made Round the World Trip: Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia

The Inca Trail and Machu Picchu were truly unforgettable experiences. At various times I met with people who were travelling ad hoc. There are advantages but being with an organised trip added unexpected highlights such as the homestay on Lake Titicaca and visits to communities near the Colca canyon.

Tailor-made Round the World Trip: South Africa, India, Australia, Thailand,
Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia

I can't possibly round up my time away, there is no way I can attempt to convey the effect that this trip had on me in only a couple of pages. So many things I experienced, I met so many people and learnt so much. The main highlights for me were in meeting the people and experiencing new cultures, languages and the innocence of young children who have nothing and yet smile.

Tailor-made Round the World Trip: Kenya, Namibia, Thailand, NZ & Las Vegas

I've had a really diverse taster of the world. I have seen real poverty in Africa to overwhelming extravagance in Las Vegas. I have worked in communities, got close with nature, met amazing people, embraced terror (extreme adventure activities) and learned about 5 different cultures.

Tailor-made Round the World Trip: Kenya, Namibia, Thailand, NZ & Las Vegas

We could get the local bus to Palampur in our spare time (not that we had much!). I went a couple of times. The local bus was quite entertaining - one time, I was on the bus and a man got on with a sheep! We also had two weekend excursions. The first weekend we went to Amritsar. From there we went to the India/Pakistan border at Wagah, to watch the border closing ceremony (outlandish costumes and silly walks - you may have seen it when Michael Palin visited in 'Himalaya'). The next day we visited the Golden temple in Amritsar.
